Research & Teaching

Through research, we benefit from the evidence of how buildings respond to different, complex uses over time and ensure that our architecture remains adaptable and future-proof.

We contribute to teaching and research in Higher Education, including at the University of East London, City University of London, and the University of Cambridge. This institutional support and academic base provides an invaluable resource for research and development within our practice.

Matter Director Roland Karthaus is a member of the architecture research group at the University of East London and was a named researcher in the Research Excellency Framework 2014.  He is current recipient of the RIBA Research Trust Award, developing his work on the rehabilitation potential of prisons.  His research interests centre on the relationship between people and urban environments, and the impacts of architecture on health and wellbeing.
